Lauren spoke at the Center for Nonprofit Success—
Chicago Fundraising Summit, April 27, 2010
Her topic—presented with Cheryle Yallen (Special Kids Foundation/CNY Enterprises) and Valerie Leonard (Consultant)—was Proposal Writing.
The presentation outlined three critical elements of successful proposal writing
1.) Format—Meeting the requirements with what is on paper,
2.) Language—How to write compelling narrative and know your audience and
3.) The unwritten secrets to getting proposals funded.
Key messages from the presentation included:
1. Use the funder’s specific format to your advantage, i.e. make sure you establish your organization’s credibility and ability to conduct the proposed project.
2. State “need for project” from your clients’/beneficiaries’ perspective, NOT the organization’s.
3. Balance stories for the “heart” with statistics for the “mind” in order to draw in different types of readers.
4. Federal/Government proposals require more matter-of-fact writing whereas private funders can allow more creativity.
5. Unless expressly prohibited by a funder, make contact with a person in advance of sending a proposal in “cold.”
6. Use a site visit to your advantage, make sure things are happening at the organization that day, take charge of the meeting, and send a handwritten thank you note to the funder for the visit.
Attendees to the conference came from around the Midwest.
